The RESY organization for recyclables disposal Ltd. was formed in 1991 as a merger of two associations and a limited liability company.

These are DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE e.V., the Verband der Wellpappenindustrie e.V. (VDW) and Reclay Systems GmbH. Together, these associations form RESY-Organisation für Wertstoffentsorgung GmbH, whose headquarters are in Darmstadt. RESY stands for "RecyclingSystem".

The company sees itself as a service provider whose services cover the entire value chain. The reason for founding the company was the Packaging Ordinance, which came into force in 1991.

As a result of this regulation, all those involved in the paper cycle saw the previously market-based and well-functioning take-back and recycling system for transport packaging in jeopardy.

The Packaging Ordinance included, among other things, the take-back and recovery obligations for transport packaging (Section 4 VerpackV) and secondary packaging (Section 5 VerpackV).

It was conceivable that take-back systems could be established from this, which could already charge the manufacturers for the costs of disposing of packaging made from waste paper. As a result, the price of packaging made from recovered paper would have tripled in purely arithmetical terms.

That's why action was needed to continue offering low prices and sustainable packaging - and RESY was founded. Because each of the three organizations is aware of how important it is to keep environmentally friendly packaging in circulation - and for several reasons: to protect the environment, the climate and thus our planet from further pollution.

The focus of the RESY recycling system is on the recycling and disposal of paper and cardboard packaging. This can be transport packaging as well as product or outer packaging.

Info

However, there is one prerequisite for participation in this system: any packaging that is to be disposed of and recycled through the recycling system must be marked with the RESY symbol.

Are there any other conditions attached to the RESY recycling system?

Paper packaging

Basically, it is very easy to participate in the RESY recycling system
and thereby make a valuable contribution to environmental protection through effective use of resources.

In order to use the RESY recycling system, technical requirements must of course be met. Basically, only packaging made of cardboard and paper may be disposed of and processed through this system. In addition, this packaging must be marked with the RESY symbol. However, this emblem may only be used if it is cardboard and paper that can be recycled.

In addition, the specific requirements set out in writing by the Technical Committees of RESY OFW GmbH in the "Explanatory Notes on Recyclability" must be strictly adhered to.

Furthermore, the conclusion of a trademark usage contract is required. Only after the contract has been concluded will an identification number be issued for the respective company. This number must always be applied to the packaging in combination with the RESY mark. After the process is completed, the packaging is RESY-licensed.

The RESY recycling system: How you can use it

Now that you know what criteria you have to meet in order to receive and use the RESY symbol, you are probably curious about how the disposal process actually works.

In principle, you can have all packaging marked with the RESY symbol disposed of by Reclay Systems GmbH and its members. This is because they have undertaken to dispose of all packaging belonging to the RESY system.

You can find out exactly which disposal company is responsible for your region at Reclay Systems GmbH based in Cologne. Here you can also find out, for example, what the difference is between RESY and the green dot.

Because even though both are committed to environmental protection, they are not the same.

The differences present themselves in the following points:

    1. Transport and outer packaging made of cardboard or paper may only be marked with the RESY symbol under certain conditions. This packaging is disposed of by the RESY disposal system at the expense of the unpackers (points of generation) and subsequently processed.

    2. Sales packaging can be marked with the green dot if it may be disposed of free of charge by a private end user. This is possible through the disposal system of public take-back points. As a rule, sales packaging is disposed of in the waste paper container, the yellow garbage can / yellow bag or also in a waste glass container.

What distinguishes the RESY paper recycling system?

The world's resources are not endless, but are already under great strain in modern times. The reasons for this are very diverse. On the one hand, our forests are being cleared and, on the other, our waters are being polluted by waste - without regard to the fact that both the world's forests and our oceans are the basis of a healthy climate. These habitats are indispensable to ensure the preservation of our ecosystem and also the biodiversity of our planet. As a result, it is necessary to both save resources and protect the environment from further pollution. Through RESY, the following is achieved:

  1. No forests are cleared to serve paper production. This is because the paper recycling system only supports the disposal of recycled paper, which is made from recyclable natural raw materials and that which was produced by the maintenance of the forest accumulating wood waste was produced.

This makes the recyclable packaging not only particularly environmentally friendly, but actually a purely natural product containing 80 percent recycled material and 20 percent virgin fiber. This packaging is particularly sustainable because it can be recycled and reused several times.

  2. Due to this fact, a lot of resources are saved. At the same time, forests are protected, since no tree has to be cleared solely for the production of paper or cardboard.

We, as experts in the packaging industry, feel that the paper recycling system is particularly sustainable and sensible because of these aspects. From our point of view, the use of packaging licensed by the RESY system is a good solution:

bio-based

recyclable

Biodegradable

The packaging material consists of purely biological substances.

With the paper recycling system, the packaging material is 100 percent recyclable and reusable.

Since they are purely natural products, the packaging materials are fully biodegradable.

The RESY symbol identifies packaging as a natural recycled product

Due to the labeling with the RESY symbol, it is clear to everyone that this is packaging that has optimal recyclability.

This turns the used corrugated board into a valuable raw material suitable for further processing.

Corrugated board

RESY thus turns all corrugated board packaging,
, in circulation in Germany into an ecologically valuable product.

In a Europe-wide comparison by the ERPC, it was found that packaging made of cardboard, carton and paper has a return rate of 81.1 percent. This corresponds to the highest value of all common types of packaging.

This fact indicates a clear trend reversal in terms of the sustainability of packaging materials.

Conclusion: The RESY recycling system makes an important contribution to environmental protection and resource conservation

RESY has proven itself to date in terms of environmental protection and resource conservation. Due to the resulting efficiency, it is very positively received by customers.

With around 81 percent of paper and cardboard packaging declining, other types of packaging (including plastic) are increasingly being squeezed out of the industrial packaging market, protecting the climate and our environment from further stress.

Since numerous members have committed themselves to actively disposing of recycled paper in accordance with the RESY paper recycling system and subsequently recycling it further, it is available throughout Germany.

Only the regional contractors need to be approached to benefit through the RESY recycling system.

The system complies with all legal regulations and guidelines and makes them available to its customers on its homepage by means of various information.

With the RESY paper recycling system, resource conservation is significantly advanced and sustainably implemented.

The concept has already proven its worth over a long period of time. In addition, the merger of the three most important companies in the paper and board industry avoided a feared price increase.

This is because part of the Packaging Ordinance is an obligation to take back and recycle packaging. Without this paper recycling system and without the merger, it is very likely that manufacturers would already have had to pay for the disposal costs of their packaging. With the result that prices would have almost tripled.

Thus, this recycling system is basically according to a tried and tested concept, which has already proven its functionality since 1991, is responsible for the continued favorable prices.

In the meantime, it is impossible to imagine the recycling company as an important component in the field of environmental protection without it.

FAQ

  1. Question: Can all waste be disposed of and recycled with the RESY recycling system?
Answer: No, it is only used to professionally dispose of paper and cardboard that meets certain sustainability requirements and ultimately to reprocess it.

  2. Question: Is this recycling service free of charge?
Answer: No, there are also costs for the RESY paper recycling system. You have to sign a so-called trademark usage contract with RESY-Organisation für Wertstoffentsorgung GmbH. In this contract, all details regarding the use of the mark are recorded in writing. For example, you are obliged to state the actual amount of packaging by weight that has been produced in the past year. Furthermore, the terms of the contract will also be recorded. Only when the contract has been completed in full and signed by both parties, you can feed your packaging into the RESY system.

  3. Question: Can this recycling system also be used to dispose of waste bearing the green dot?
Answer: No, because packaging marked with the green dot can be disposed of free of charge in containers provided by the public or in the yellow bag/bin.
