Product protection also enjoys a particularly high priority with regard to these important issues, which contributes to better sustainability in logistics.

This is also emphasized in this context by the German Corrugated Board Industry Association (VDW), which together with the leading industrial association of the German pulp and paper industry (Die Papierindustrie e. V.) commissioned an analysis of the greenhouse gas balance of the packaging materials used in online trade in Germany and published the results at the beginning of 2022.

The study was carried out by the renowned Bifa Environmental Institute. The aim was to investigate the climate protection potential of corrugated board packaging and to compare it with other packaging.

In contrast, the greenhouse gas balance of, for example, heavy reusable boxes made of plastic is measurably less favorable.

The fact that corrugated board, as a fiber-based material solution, significantly outperforms other packaging materials in terms of greenhouse gas balance and consumption of resources and energy during production is also an interesting approach for setting the future course of environmental policy.

In their coalition agreement, the SPD, Greens and FDP particularly emphasized the importance of closed material cycles and recyclable products, among other things. The relevant aspects are already being successfully implemented in the corrugated board industry today.

As a result, every type of packaging always has a direct impact on the customer and often also on their environment. Significant cost advantages through the use of environmentally friendly materials

In addition, there are cost advantages for logistics and the overarching areas. If you prefer to use environmentally friendly or sustainable materials for your packaging, you can save a lot of money. Even with corrugated board, the costs per kilogram of packaging material are significantly reduced compared to plastic packaging.

For example, the license costs for easily recyclable and environmentally friendly materials are more favorable. In addition to corrugated board, this applies, for example, to packaging made of natural materials. In this case, the pricing policy reflects the two central objectives of the German Packaging Act: the use of more sustainable materials and increasing the recycling rate of packaging of various types.

That is why the switch to paper and cardboard is also worthwhile financially

In this respect, the dual systems promote the use of materials that are harmful to the climate and the environment. At the same time, this helps to reduce costs in logistics. Switching from plastic to paper and cardboard reduces material costs by more than 80 percent.

If natural materials such as grass, starch or cellulose are used, the cost savings are even more than 90 percent. Monetary benefits also result from the targeted use of environmentally friendly and sustainable packaging in marketing.
