In this way, we are happy to support and promote a sustainable and environmentally friendly form of packaging. When you use cardboard and paper-based packaging materials, you not only contribute to environmental and climate protection, but also benefit from numerous product advantages.

Paper and cardboard make all your logistics a lot more sustainable. Find out why and how this works in the following article.

Single - or multiwall corrugated board as an environmentally and climate friendly material

Packaging materials on corrugated board - like the Full overlap slotted-type box here - are environmentally and climate friendly.

Packaging solutions made of corrugated board
have various advantages over other packaging, such as reusable shipping boxes or plastic boxes.

In the overall view, the reliable product protection provided by fiber-based corrugated board is in the spotlight. Characteristic features here are above all the material-related durability and resistance, strength and stability.

Added to this are product strengths such as low weight, easy handling including quick assembly and space-saving storage.

Current study on the sustainability and climate protection potential of corrugated board

However, the totality of the advantages of packaging materials made of paper-based board reflects much more. Because paper and board also set real standards in terms of environmental compatibility, sustainability and climate protection.

Product protection also enjoys a particularly high priority with regard to these important issues, which contributes to better sustainability in logistics.

This is also emphasized in this context by the German Corrugated Board Industry Association (VDW), which together with the leading industrial association of the German pulp and paper industry (Die Papierindustrie e. V.) commissioned an analysis of the greenhouse gas balance of the packaging materials used in online trade in Germany and published the results at the beginning of 2022.

The study was carried out by the renowned Bifa Environmental Institute. The aim was to investigate the climate protection potential of corrugated board packaging and to compare it with other packaging.

The ecological footprint acts as a yardstick

A decisive factor for the degree of sustainability in logistics is the ecological footprint of the packaging used. In addition, if products are shipped in unsuitable packaging without sufficient protection, you risk transport damage. This results not only in customer complaints but also in loss of use. At the same time, unused products always mean an avoidable environmental impact.

High-quality corrugated board packaging can prevent such scenarios. Packaging thus becomes a central factor influencing the life cycle assessment of logistics and production.

In addition, the low packaging weight and the comparatively energy-efficient and resource-saving production speak for corrugated board. Palamo provides you with another advantage: All corrugated cardboard packaging available from us can be specifically customized with our smart configurator. In this way, you can easily tailor your Palamo packaging to the exact shape, size and weight of the product to be packaged.

Corrugated board and co.: inspiration for future environmental policy

According to the Bifa study, corrugated board packaging that is optimally matched to the contents thus makes an important contribution to climate protection and sustainability. In contrast, the greenhouse gas balance of, for example, heavy reusable boxes made of plastic is measurably less favorable.

The fact that corrugated board, as a fiber-based material solution, significantly outperforms other packaging materials in terms of greenhouse gas balance and consumption of resources and energy during production is also an interesting approach for setting the future course of environmental policy.

In their coalition agreement, the SPD, Greens and FDP particularly emphasized the importance of closed material cycles and recyclable products, among other things. The relevant aspects are already being successfully implemented in the corrugated board industry today.

Environmentally friendly packaging as the most visible factor in sustainable logistics

Ultimately, it is always the packaging that represents sustainable logistics as the most visible factor. Your customers come into direct contact with your products and thus also with the respective packaging.

As a result, every type of packaging always has a direct impact on the customer and often also on their environment. In addition to the pure cardboard with its environmentally friendly properties, a unique design, additional finishes and, for example, suitable filling material also contribute to the unpacking experience.

Corrugated board blanks are particularly suitable as filling material, which further support the environmentally friendly and sustainable character of the packaging. In this way, the type of packaging also always has an influence on the brand image and corporate image.

Significant cost advantages through the use of environmentally friendly materials

In addition, there are cost advantages for logistics and the overarching areas. If you prefer to use environmentally friendly or sustainable materials for your packaging, you can save a lot of money. Even with corrugated board, the costs per kilogram of packaging material are significantly reduced compared to plastic packaging.

For example, the license costs for easily recyclable and environmentally friendly materials are more favorable. In addition to corrugated board, this applies, for example, to packaging made of natural materials. In this case, the pricing policy reflects the two central objectives of the German Packaging Act: the use of more sustainable materials and increasing the recycling rate of packaging of various types.

That is why the switch to paper and cardboard is also worthwhile financially

In this respect, the dual systems promote the use of materials that are harmful to the climate and the environment. At the same time, this helps to reduce costs in logistics. Switching from plastic to paper and cardboard reduces material costs by more than 80 percent.

If natural materials such as grass, starch or cellulose are used, the cost savings are even more than 90 percent. Monetary benefits also result from the targeted use of environmentally friendly and sustainable packaging in marketing.

Here, packaging based on corrugated board or natural materials can make a statement in terms of sustainability and environmental friendliness.

Transport costs and the duration of transport are also reduced, as the elimination of plastic and similar environmentally harmful materials results in lower consumption of materials and resources. This benefits the logistics sector in particular, as capacities are freed up and can be used more effectively elsewhere.

By eliminating plastic and similarly environmentally harmful materials, transport costs and duration are reduced.

The importance of paper recycling for logistics

Despite advancing digitization, paper will continue to be an important tool in everyday life in various forms. Paper will be indispensable in the global economy for the foreseeable future.

The areas of application and the intended use may shift, but the grades produced today will continue to play a good role in the future. In view of a shortage of natural resources, the importance and significance of paper recycling is therefore growing.

In order to save additional logistics costs and free up logistical capacities, separate and complete waste paper collection must be established within the framework of modernized collection systems. However, it must be taken into account that the quality requirements for recyclable waste paper are continuously increasing.

This is actually associated with additional costs, but thanks to state-of-the-art sorting equipment, all cost and also convenience requirements can now be met almost completely.

Conclusion: Green logistics - profitable for companies and the environment

Sustainable packaging made of environmentally friendly materials is an integral part of resource-efficient and environmentally friendly logistics processes. Logistics in this form is also referred to as green logistics. This also includes, for example, CO2-reducing measures during transport and energy-saving heating of storage facilities.

The right packaging ensures real sustainability, which benefits both companies and the environment. The selection of environmentally friendly and innovative packaging materials is growing rapidly.

However, it should not be forgotten to develop strategies and processes accordingly within the framework of green logistics. As a competent provider of standardized and individual packaging solutions made of environmentally friendly materials, we support companies in optimizing their logistics.
